Eligibility Criteria for the University of Tokyo MEXT Scholarshipin Japan

Applicants for the University of Tokyo MEXT Scholarship must meet the following requirements:

  • All International students from eligible countries are encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants must hold outstanding academic records with a Bachelor’s Degree if applying for a Master’s program or Master’s Degree or equivalent for Doctoral Program with 2.30 CGPA.
  • Applicants should be born after or on April 2, 1988.
  • Applicants must apply in a field “previous degree field”.
  • Applicants must be medically fit.
  • Applicants must be willing to attend the program by the date announced by the University of Tokyo.
  • English Proficiency: Applicants must have passed a language proficiency test either in English or Japanese.
    • Applicants must have a B2 or higher language proficiency or IELTS 5.5 or higher TOEFL iBT 72 or higher.
    • OR if the student’s previous degree language is English, they can provide an English Proficiency Certificate from their previous institute.

Before beginning your online application for the University of Tokyo MEXT Scholarship in Japan, applicants must prepare the following documents:

  1. Valid passport Copy
  2. Passport Type Picture not older than 6 months

  4. An official transcript from your most recent university attendance (at undergraduate or graduate level). If you are currently enrolled in a university (undergraduate or graduate), please submit an official transcript from your most recent degree program (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD) as well as an official transcript from your current degree program.

  6. Letter of recommendation from “dean or above”. This letter must fulfill the following conditions:
    1. The name of the addressee stated in the letter must be “the President of the University of Tokyo”
    2. The letter must be printed on your university’s letterhead.
    3. Dean or above must write and sign this letter. Note: Digital signature is not acceptable.
  7. Abstract of graduation thesis (should be concise and to the point)
  8. Official statement of / expected graduation of the last university attended.
